Los Angeles

Facebook LinkedIn WhatsApp Viber Pinterest Twitter Email

The only city in the world to have an officially designated Filipinotown, Los Angeles accounts for the largest concentration of Filipino Americans in the United States. LA’s landmarks – and perpetually sunny weather – will be familiar to Filipino travelers steeped in entertainment: the Hollywood Sign atop Mount Lee, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios in the San Fernando Valley area and the grand mansions of Beverly Hills, 92010. But there’s more to LA than the blinding lights of Hollywood. Head to Downtown LA for a day at the Broad Museum, The Last Bookstore and Little Tokyo. Discover the bustling dining and LGBT scene in West Hollywood. Let your inner bohemian out at Venice Beach. In LA, you can direct your own adventure and be the star of your own show.

The Juicy Leaf

Plant aficionados will drool over The Juicy Leaf’s impressive and well-curated collection of designer terrariums, succulent displays and flower arrangements. You can even design your own terrarium, if you’re feeling creative. And don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb – pick up one of their low-maintenance air plants, or choose from a collection of pottery, candles, vintage objects and art sculptures.

Where to Dine & Drink

Highland Park Brewery

Highland Park Brewery is a storage-room-turned-brewery located in The Hermosillo, a beer and wine bar run by the same group. The goal here is simple: make excellent, experimental beer and have a great time doing it. Visitors to the facility can sample a rotating line-up of beers that make use of everything from fresh herbs from the owner’s garden to California-grown fruits right off the tree.

SteelCraft Long Beach

Long Beach is one of the world’s biggest shipping ports, and home to the Greater Los Angeles area’s first SteelCraft – a collection of shipping containers repurposed into an outdoor food hall, similar to Common Ground in Seoul and London’s Boxpark Shoreditch.

Grand Central Market

The grand dame of LA’s food halls, Grand Central Market opened in 1917, initially bringing together more than 90 vendors. While it’s always been a bustling place filled with stalls serving up delicious cuisine, it’s undergone a transformation over the last decade and is now one of LA’s hippest breakfast and lunch destinations. Must-visits for the Filipino traveler are two stalls run by Filipino-Americans: Eggslut by Alvin Cailan for sandwiches and breakfast with eggs, and Sari Sari Store by Margarita Manzke for rice bowls.

Far East Plaza

Despite its garish and worn-out pink, green and neon exterior, Far East Plaza in Chinatown is one of LA’s most dynamic food incubators. It’s home to an array of the city’s hottest eateries, including Lasa, one of the area’s most buzzed about Filipino restaurants, and Howlin’ Rays, a Nashville hot chicken sensation that popped up in 2016.
