This coastal basin was first occupied by Australian Aboriginals at least 30,000 years ago, before the arrival of the British, led by Captain James Cook, in 1770. Eighteen years later, Sydney was established as part of the British colony of New South Wales, before being completely independent of the British government in 1986. Today, it is Australia’s financial powerhouse – a city lined with gleaming skyscrapers and architectural icons such as the Sydney Opera House. It’s also a popular destination for foodies; here you’ll find the region’s best culinary talents and fine-dining institutions serving a unique brand of Mod Oz cuisine. There are 70 beaches along Sydney’s coastline, the most famous being Bondi Beach.
